CVEU and CAVA are still in the mediation phase of bargaining our first contract and CVEU will continue to work hard to finalize a fair contract. We believe it is essential to improve educator compensation so we are in line with similar schools throughout California. We also believe it is necessary to address our spiraling workload, so we can better provide the attention our students deserve. Both fixes will help reduce teacher and student turnover, and increase the stability of our school.
The next mediation session will take place in Simi Valley November 28th and 29th. If the PERB mediator believes we are making progress we will continue to schedule mediation sessions. Should the mediator determine that the two parties are too far apart on the issues, we will be certified to fact-finding.
In the fact-finding phase there will be a panel of three people, one from CAVA's side, one from CVEU's side and a neutral party who put together a report over a 30 day time period. The report will be presented to both sides at the end of fact-finding. If a settlement is not reached at this time, a strike may take place. While CVEU does not want a strike to occur, we will continue to prepare for all possible scenarios.
Strike Authorization Vote
Earlier this month CVEU educators voted overwhelming to authorize a strike in the event CAVA administration does not meaningfully address our core values. Below are the results:
Our hope is we can settle a strong contract that ensures a bright future for our school, our teachers and our students, without ever having to strike. No strike would take place in any circumstances, before March 2018. Our goal is to build on our recent progress in mediation—we agreed to job security provisions on October 30th—and fix our salary and workload. We will keep you posted, and let you know how you can best help.
CVEU Featured at CTA State Council
We were honored that CVEU leaders were given the opportunity to attend CTA State Council on Saturday, October 21st in Los Angeles. CVEU Vice-President, Sheryl Carruth spoke to 800 members about charter school accountability and our efforts to help make CAVA the best online school possible. Our message was well received and CVEU look forward to continued collaboration with CTA.
